Physicals Q & A

What are physicals?

A physical exam covers your health head to toe. It measures vital signs like temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, height, and weight.  Physicals can be more general, or they can be specific to a particular problem. Typically, the Cookeville Medical Clinic RHC team conducts your physical at least once a year.

There are different types of physicals and include the following:

DOT physicals

DOT physicals are comprehensive physical examinations required to operate commercial motor vehicles. Passing your exam ensures you’re healthy enough to complete your job duties safely. The team has many years of experience conducting DOT physicals – and the paperwork needed to begin or maintain commercial driving jobs.

Travel Physicals

Travel physicals get you ready to travel, work, or study abroad.

What should I bring with me to physicals?

Depending on the physical at Cookeville Medical Clinic RHC, you may need to bring with you the following:

  • List of medications
  • Picture ID
  • Current medical certificate (if you have one)
  • Glasses or contact lenses if you wear them
  • Form of payment

If you see a specialist for a medical condition, you may need clearance from them before passing a DOT exam.

What happens during physical exams?

During physical exams, the team checks your weight, body mass index (BMI), pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs. They review your medical history and the medications you may take. They also evaluate your throat, breathing, eyes, heartbeat, abdomen, and reflexes.

The team assesses heart and lung auscultation, hearing, and vision. They may complete blood tests, urine tests, or other diagnostic tests to detect or rule out potential problems.

What should I expect after my physical?

After your visit, Cookeville Medical Clinic RHC lets you know if you’re in good enough health to pass the exam. You might need clearance from a specialist stating you’re healthy enough to complete all required job duties. You may require prescription medications or vision correction changes as a condition of employment.

Depending on the type of physical, the team fills out the appropriate paperwork needed by your employer or school and gives you a copy of a medical certificate for your records.

How often should I schedule physicals?

Cookeville Medical Clinic RHC conducts an all-over and full-body exam annually. For DOT physicals, a passing exam is usually valid for up to 24 months. Schedule an appointment with Cookeville Medical Clinic RHC to complete DOT exams as you require them.

Staff members offer other types of physicals too. Examples include work, school, sports, and camp physicals for you or your family members.
